JOSEPHIANS PULL TOGETHER TO MAKE EXHIBITION
A SUCCESS
BOOK FAIR BOOSTS READING DRIVE
An ordinary book exhibition
was made extraordinary by the student's effort and the whole-hearted support
of the school. St. Joseph's college held its annual Book Exhibition recently
with more than 2500 books from 18 publishers on display.
Teacher librarian Robert
Ng said that the exhibition was organised as a supporting activity of a
reading system which encourages students to read four books each semesters
to cultivate reading habit.
"In boys school
where sports and ball games dominate leisure time, it is rather difficult
to encourage students to read," said Mr.Ng.
President of the Library
Society, Secondary Six student Thomas Ng and the other of the Society missed
stayed late after school and turn up at school on Saturday to organise
the exhibition. All the liaison work and arrangement were done by Secondary
One to Three members and a committee of Secondary Four to Six students.
Booth assistants promoted books and shared reading experiences with potential
customers.
Secondary Three student
Hui Kar-ho was at counter of popular Chinese novels and sold three sets
in less than one hour.
"Novels full of
words may sound boring. Novels in comic form are much more popular."
Kar-ho said.
Several
other students also showed a preference for comics had the potential to
be this year's bestseller. Last year's bestseller was Forrest Gump by Winston
Groom.
Books were available
at bargain prices and some publishers even invited the committee members
to their warehouse to choose the books. Thomas said that the school had
the greatest confidence in them and none of the books exhibited had needed
censoring.
"It's a kind of
self-discipline," he said. " We know what books should be brought
to school, and what shouldn't be. "
