 The Second Coming

Mr. Tung Chee Hwa (Left) casting his vote

After the first election of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, here comes the first election of the District Council on 28th November 1999, which signifies the realization of the Basic Law and puts another great step forward towards democracy in Hong Kong. Similar to the previous election, our school, St. Joseph's College, was also chosen as one of the temporary polling station by the Geographical Constituency. The polling booths and facilities were set up in the Library and the New Hall.

In the afternoon, the Chief Executive Mr. Tung Chee Hwa, accompanied by his wife, arrived at St. Joseph's. Like the previous election, he was then led to the New Hall to proceed with the registration processes. After that, Mr. Tung was led to the Library and cast his vote, facing more than forty local and foreign reports. Afterward, Mr. Tung was invited to a Media Session.

After the unique second coming of Mr. Tung, we are now looking forward to his third coming on the Millenium Grand Open Day.

The following is the transcript (English part) of the media session given by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, after casting his vote at St Joseph's College today (Sunday):

Reporter: I just wonder if you can make a general comment about the conduct of the election so far, your impression, how you view this election because it is the first body under your stewardship to which the overwhelming majority of the people will be directly elected?

Mr Tung: This is the district councils election. Up to now what I see what I hear the election is going well. I have just voted myself and once again I take this opportunity to ask all the citizens of Hong Kong who have registered as voters, please come out and vote. I think our constitutional system is very well defined and we are moving forward so far as district council is concerned or the Legislative Council is concerned in accordance with the Basic Law.
